Evaluation of the PHE acute trust CPE (‘superbug’) toolkit

Microbiology Laboratory

The Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) is a so-called superbug, resistant to the types of antibiotics that are now considered the last resort for treating drug-resistant infections.

In December 2013, as part of the response to a small number of uncontrolled outbreaks of CPE in hospitals in England, Public Health England (PHE) published guidance to promote the early detection, management and control of CPE colonisation and infection in acute hospital settings (CPE toolkit).

We conducted an evaluation of the toolkit, which highlighted important problems with implementation of the guidance. The evaluation findings provide an evidence base which will help inform recommendations for future CPE prevention and control measures.
